Educational activities

Since its foundation, the scientific activity of the Institute has been extremely multidisciplinary, covering the fields of biological, chemical, and physical oceanography, sedimentology, fisheries biology, and mariculture.

Employees of the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries are involved in teaching at the University Department of Marine Studies of the University of Split, in the following university study programs:

  • undergraduate study Sea Fisheries,
  • undergraduate study Marine biology and ecology,
  • graduate study Sea Fisheries,
  • graduate study Marine biology and ecology.

Sea Fisheries

Marine fishing is a complex economic activity, which is subject to the influence of various biotic and abiotic factors determining its course and directing its development, and for proper management and protection of renewable marine resources, it is necessary to take account of them. Fish and other marine organisms, as objects of fishing, are a subject of interest in fisheries. These are renewable resources of the sea, which by unreasonable and irresponsible exploitation, especially excessive immature specimens catch can quickly become scarce and devastated. As the development of fishing is determined by the size of the biomass intended for fishing and the permitted levels of its exploitation, the development of aquaculture is determined primarily by the suitability of areas for the production of fish and other marine organisms. Therefore, for the proper and responsible management and protection of renewable marine resources, development, and performance of activities of fishing, breeding, preservation, processing, and trade of fish and other marine organisms, it is necessary to educate staff that is necessary for successful implementation of activities of sea fisheries. This staff is educated in the program of Marine Fisheries, which is the only program in which we educate high-level personnel working in the field of fisheries.

Because sea fishing, as a theoretical and applied scientific discipline, includes methods and activities of fishing, farming, processing and trade of fish and other marine organisms, and methods and activities of management, protection, and exploitation of living marine resources, the undergraduate study of Marine Fisheries, which forms high-educated personnel working in the area, includes issues of Marine Biology and Fishery Biology, exploitation, management and protection of renewable marine resources, use of fishing tools, fishing boats and fishing ports, fish farming and other marine organisms, technology, processing and management of deterioration of products of the sea, transport of fish and other marine organisms and the economics and organization of fisheries. Because the people who study at this university study are rare not only in Croatia but also in European terms, they surely will have an important role in administrative bodies dealing with the problems of fisheries in the economic chamber, in Departments for inspection of fishing activities, and in companies engaged in fishing, farming, processing and trade of fish and other marine organisms, their conservation, and management of deterioration and protection of living marine resources. Qualified staff will become more important by organizing the Coast Guard, but also by our country’s accession to the European Union because the studies that form the staff educated in the needs of fisheries are rare.

Undergraduate Program

Duration of study: Classes of undergraduate study of Sea Fisheries last three years or 6 semesters, and by it at least 180 ECTS points are acquired.

Academic title: Upon completion of undergraduate study a title of a Bachelor/Bachelorette (baccalaureus/baccalaurea) of Sea Fisheries is acquired.

Competences acquired upon completion of study: A Bachelor/Bachelorette of Sea Fisheries is educated and enabled for expert work in fishing, farming, processing and trade of fish and other marine organisms and management of their deterioration, for management and protection of living marine resources, for design and construction of fishing tools, for technological design of facilities for processing and preservation of sea products, breeding of fish and other marine organisms, for making the technological requirements for the design and construction of fishing vessels, for expert work in scientific and educational organizations dealing with marine research and its living wealth, for education of fisheries staff in schools, for work in administrative bodies dealing with issues of fisheries, for expert work in marine activities of the Inspection of fisheries, protection of the sea and its living resources, for work in economic and commercial chambers, and on all other matters that relate to activities of fisheries and management of its living resources.
A Bachelor/Bachelorette of Sea Fisheries is qualified to resume study at graduate studies in biotechnical sciences, in the field of agronomy, biotechnology, and food technology, and studies in natural sciences, in the field of biology.

Graduate Program

Graduate Study of Marine Fisheries provides an expert and scientific deepening of knowledge acquired through undergraduate studies and thus represents the logical continuation of studying at a higher level of education. The program is multidisciplinary, in which on the basis of knowledge of natural and biotechnical sciences, knowledge of specific areas related to the issues of fisheries, aquaculture, management of living marine resources, and the use of fisheries products are acquired. The program is designed to offer a number of specialized elective courses that account for about 36% of the total number of ECTS points, which allows the students to, through elective subjects, choose content suited to their interests and needs, and so choose the direction of their study.

Duration of study: Classes of graduate study of Sea Fisheries last two years or 4 semesters, and by it at least 120 ECTS points are acquired.

Academic title: Upon completion of graduate study a title of a Master/Engineer (Magister) of Sea Fisheries is acquired.

Competences acquired upon completion of study: Master/engineer of Sea Fisheries, in addition to the jobs they can perform as a Bachelor of fisheries, is qualified to continue their education at the postgraduate university specialist and doctoral studies and to start conducting scientific and scientific-educational work in scientific institutions and universities engaged in research activities of fisheries and their living wealth and education of personnel, as well as work on more complex and demanding tasks in the field of fisheries and other marine fishing activities, including the problem of fishing, farming, processing and trade of fish and other marine organisms, their preservation from decay, management and protection of living marine resources and the use of fisheries products.

Marine Biology and Ecology

The sea is a significant source of wealth for each maritime country, which can in various ways contribute to its economic development and prosperity and citizens’ standard of living. This can be achieved by taking advantage of its living and non-living resources, fish farming and other marine resources, tourism, shipping, and similar activities. Some of these activities are not compatible and can harm one another. Therefore, for the development of each country, its experts need to know how to exploit the sea and its living wealth in a sustainable way to benefit humans and marine ecosystems. This task can be achieved through systematic education, whose fundamental goal is understanding and explaining the physical, chemical, and biological processes in the sea, predicting changes in its ecosystems in response to different influences and controlled and sustainable exploitation of marine resources.

That is precisely what is achieved by studying Marine Biology and Ecology, where personnel is trained to work in the field of biological oceanography, which includes a wide range of biological studies, from the diversity of marine organisms to their spread, features, mutual relations and interactions with the marine environment. Due to the increasing problem of disposing of a large number of harmful and hazardous substances in the sea, and the irrational use of marine resources, these studies give special attention to the protection of endangered species and environmentally vulnerable areas. For understanding a number of biological processes in the sea, it is necessary to have a good understanding of the functioning of the entire marine ecosystem, which in return requires an extremely high degree of inter-disciplinarity, and that can be accomplished through these studies.

Knowledge acquired in this undergraduate study may also be of importance for a range of other activities such as construction, industry, urban planning, spatial planning and energy.
Knowledge acquired at the undergraduate study of Marine Biology and Ecology provides a possibility for further education at graduate studies, since in addition to continuing to study Marine Biology and Ecology, one can without difficulty continue education in natural sciences and other studies of natural or biotehnical orientation.

Graduate Program

Graduate study of Marine Biology and Ecology is in its content markedly multidisciplinary. In this study, on the bases of knowledge of the natural sciences, knowledge of specific areas related to issues of biology, ecology and protection of the sea is acquired. Interaction of the content of study classes with modern scientific knowledge, which is already established in the undergraduate level, during graduate study become more powerful and thus represent the logical continuation on a higher level of education. The program is structured in a way of providing a large number of specialized elective courses that account for 30% of the total number of ECTS points, which gives students the ability to create their program themselves and to guide it in accordance with their interests and needs.

Duration of study: Classes of graduate study of Marine Biology and Ecology last two years or 4 semesters, and by it at least 120 ECTS points are acquired.

Academic title: Upon completion of a graduate study the title of a Master (Magister) of Marine Biology and Ecology is acquired.

Competences acquired upon completion of study: A Master of Marine Biology and Ecology, in addition to the jobs that can be performed by a Bachelor/Bachelorette of Marine Biology and Ecology, is enabled to continue education at postgraduate expert and university studies and to start addressing science-teaching and scientific research work at universities and research institutions. He is also capable of creating his own actions and programs related to environmental issues from city to state level, as well as working in companies in the field of management and environmental protection, with special emphasis on the protection of the marine environment.
