Croatian-French cooperation on the analysis of bivalve shells from Antarctica

13.10.2023.

In addition to the exploration of the Adriatic Sea, the Institute’s scientists are involved in various international projects and expeditions. The most attractive areas for scientists are the less explored and less accessible parts of the Earth.

In the expedition conducted by scientists from the University of Brest, samples of the mussel Laternula elliptica, the largest mussel in Antarctica, were collected in the area of the Adela coast (Antarctica). Their shells were analyzed in our laboratories in Split using sclerochronological methods.

The collaboration of French and Croatian scientists has proven that the growth of mussels depends on complex ecological factors, including the dynamics of ice in Antarctica, and that their shells are an extremely important source of information for reconstructing past and present changes in the Antarctic environment.
