Melita Peharda Uljević has been elected as an associate member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts

The Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts has elected 17 new full members, 6 corresponding members and 15 associate members. The scientist from the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, Melita Peharda Uljević, Ph.D., was elected an associate member of HAZU in the Department of Natural Sciences.

Melita Peharda Uljević, Ph.D. was born in Zagreb in 1975. She graduated from the College of the Atlantic in the USA in 1997. In 2000 she obtained her Master’s degree in Oceanology and in 2003 her PhD in Biology, both from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Zagreb. She has been employed at the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries since 1998. in 2017, she was elected scientific advisor in a permanent position from the field of natural sciences, in the field of biology.

Peharda Uljević is a leading scientist in the field of bivalve ecology and sclerochronology in the Republic of Croatia and one of the leading scientists in the field of bivalve sclerochronology in Europe. She is the author of more than 90 scientific papers, many of which have been published in leading scientific journals in the field of marine sciences. She is the author of the monograph Biology, ecology and diversity of Adriatic bivalves, published by the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in 2022. She actively participates in the education of young scientists (she was a mentor in the preparation of eight doctoral theses), the popularization of science and the organization of international congresses. She is editor-in-chief of the journal Acta Adriatica and guest and assistant editor of several high-ranking journals. She is the leader of research projects funded by the Croatian Science Foundation (SCOOL; BiVACME). She is a recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship (2015/2016) and the annual HAZU award for contributions in the field of natural sciences for the year 2022.
