The second meeting of the European project BlueGOV – Empowering Coastal Govrenace Throguh Ocean Literacy was held in Split on 7–8 October 2026. The project is funded through the Erasmus+ programme, and the meeting was hosted by the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries.
The project brings together seven partner organisations, including our Institute, with the aim of improving coastal management through a better understanding of the sea and the impact of human activities on marine ecosystems. As part of the project, educational resources and practical tools will be developed to support decision-making that contributes to marine conservation.
During the two-day meeting, partners discussed the results of research conducted so far and the challenges facing European coastal regions, while also agreeing on the next steps in project implementation. They also began planning an ocean literacy training programme and an awareness-raising campaign that will engage local communities in the coming months.
The project includes research in three European coastal regions: the Baltic, the Atlantic and the Adriatic. In the Adriatic, research is being conducted in an area under the responsibility of the Public Institution PRIRODA of Šibenik-Knin County, the project’s Croatian associated partner.
Alongside our Institute, the project partners are the University of Greifswald (Germany), WWF Portugal (Portugal), Sea Teach (Spain), the European Marine Science Educators’ Association – EMSEA (Belgium), AlterContacts (Netherlands) and OnProjects (Spain).
