At the University Gallery in Split, on Thursday, 15 January 2026, a press conference was held to mark the opening of the international project Science Comes to Town. On that occasion, the project’s goals and programme were presented, and the ceremonial opening was announced for 20 January 2026 at the Croatian Home (Hrvatski dom) and the Diocletian’s Cellars in Split.
The project was presented by Ivo Bilić, Deputy Mayor of the City of Split, Prof. Dr. Dragan Ljutić, Rector of the University of Split, Dr. Živana Ninčević Gladan, Director of the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split, and Ivica Zelić, Director of the Center of Excellence of the Split-Dalmatia County.
The conference emphasised that the main objectives of the project are to strengthen the connection between science and public policies, encourage scientific and research careers among young people, and foster dialogue between the scientific community, local authorities, citizens, and the business sector.
The programme of the ceremonial opening includes panel discussions on the role of cities in science and society, as well as on linking science, culture, and society. A special session entitled “Science4Future, Future4Science”, moderated by Dr. Boris Jokić from the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb, will be dedicated to encouraging and inspiring future generations of scientists.
As part of the project, an interactive exhibition will be opened in the Diocletian’s Cellars and will be open to the public until 24 January 2026.
The Science Comes to Town project is an international collaborative initiative funded by the European Union, led by the cities and regions of Kiel, Brest, and Split, with more than 70 associated partners.
