A regional conference on aquaculture entitled “Shaping the future of sustainable aquaculture in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea” was held in Crete.
The event was attended by top officials and representatives of Mediterranean countries, aquaculture experts and people working in the sector. The aim was to assess progress to date, respond to new challenges and set priorities for the development of the aquaculture sector. Our scientists from the Aquaculture Laboratory, Dr. sc. Tanja Šegvić Bubić and Dr. sc. Ivana Lepen Pleić.
In the thematic session “Building resilience of aquaculture to climate change”, Dr. Šegvić Bubić participated as a panelist together with other prominent scientists from the field of aquaculture: Javier Ojeda Gonzalez-Posada, Nikos Papandroulakis, Elisa Ravagnan and moderator Erika M.D. Porporate.
Over the last ten years, aquaculture production has almost doubled and revenues have increased by 74.5%. However, the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions are facing unique vulnerability and economic instability, increasing pressure on the food industry. These issues were at the center of discussions at the conference.
The conference was organized by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Greek government and the European Union.
