The final meeting and conference of the SOUNDSCAPE project (Soundscapes in the North Adriatic Sea and their impact on Marine Biological Resources) will be held in Rijeka on November 23, 2021 from 9:00 to 17:30. The project is funded by the CBC Program INTERREG V / A Italy – Croatia.
The project was coordinated by the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, Split, and was attended by three other Croatian and four Italian partners.
The main goal of the Project was to establish cross-border technical, scientific and institutional cooperation between Italian and Croatian organizations in order to jointly investigate the impact of anthropogenic underwater noise on marine fauna and the biodiversity and ecosystem of the northern Adriatic in general.

Main goals
The main goal of the Project was to establish cross-border technical, scientific and institutional cooperation between Italian and Croatian companies in order to jointly study the assessment of the impact of underwater on marine fauna and in general on the biodiversity and ecosystem of the northern Adriatic. This cooperation aims to ensure the effective protection of marine biodiversity and to develop the sustainable use of marine and coastal ecosystems and natural resources.
As part of the Soundscape project, anthropogenic underwater noise was measured at 9 stations (frequency band 40KHz, 16 bits) set in the coastal and open waters of the northern Adriatic during 15 months (March, 2020 – June, 2021). In addition to different statistical processing of the measured data, the mean noise values at 20-second intervals were calculated and used as input data to the Quonops numerical model for the purpose of its calibration. Using these and other necessary parameters (bathymetry, sediment types, sea temperature and salinity, waves) numerical modeling obtained maps of spatio-temporal values of underwater noise distribution that can be used to analyze its impact on the marine fauna of the northern Adriatic.
