Towards the New European Union Bathing Water Directive

In the European Union, bathing water management is regulated by Bathing Water Directive 2006/7/ EC (BWD). The purpose of the Directive is to preserve, protect and improve the quality of the environment and to protect human health. According to the Directive, the European Commission is required to review the current Directive by 2020 at the latest. After the adoption of the new directive, which is scheduled for the first quarter of 2023, EU member states are to transpose the new directive into a national regulatory framework, taking into account local and regional specificities. These specificities should be based on relevant scientific knowledge and research. The main objective of this project is to provide basic guidelines for the revision of a current Croatian national regulation for coastal bathing water quality management. This will be achieved by using the results of the research conducted within this project and current scientific knowledge. A new regulation will provide a better framework for the management of coastal bathing waters and ensure better protection of human health and the environment. The results of the project could be applicable to other countries and regions with similar environmental conditions, such as Mediterranean countries.
