Dr. Petra Zemunik Selak affirmed global excellence in the world’s most prestigious geoscience journal

27.10.2025.

In one of the world’s most prestigious scientific journals, Reviews of Geophysics, Croatian scientists have published a comprehensive review paper summarizing current knowledge on meteorological tsunamis.

This journal ranks among the most influential in the field of geosciences, and the fact that this paper was published there highlights how highly regarded Croatian research on the Adriatic has become worldwide. Thanks to our scientists, the Adriatic Sea is now recognized as one of the key natural laboratories for studying meteorological tsunamis.

Our researcher, Dr. Petra Zemunik Selak, is a co-author of the paper, in collaboration with scientists from the Ruđer Bošković Institute and the Faculty of Science, University of Split.

Dr. Zemunik Selak studies the phenomenon of meteorological tsunamis from a global perspective. In her doctoral research, conducted at the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, she collected and analyzed minute sea-level measurements from several hundred stations worldwide and created a database that is now widely used in studies of sea-level oscillations.

She also published one of the first global studies on short-period sea-level oscillations caused by atmospheric processes. Dr. Zemunik Selak is the recipient of the State Award for Young Scientists (2022) in the field of natural sciences, as well as two Institute Awards for Scientific Excellence (2021 and 2022) from the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries.

At present, she is exploring the potential of machine learning methods for predicting meteotsunamis, aiming to develop more effective early-warning systems and improve coastal risk management.
