New book on Ocean Literacy – a Key Step in Connecting Science and Society

18.03.2026.

As part of the Springer Nature SDG Series, the first of three volumes dedicated to ocean literacy has been published. Among more than 90 authors from 19 countries is also our scientist, Dr. Daria Ezgeta Balić.

The book Ocean Literacy: The Foundation for the Success of the Ocean Decade – Volume I: Transforming Education, Research, and Engagement is available in open access, meaning it can be read and downloaded free of charge.

This volume presents a contribution developed through the EuroGOOS Ocean Literacy Working Group, showcasing activities and best practices from scientists across Europe aimed at strengthening ocean literacy and promoting more active societal engagement in understanding and protecting the ocean.

Although scientific knowledge about the ocean continues to grow, its application in society and policy remains insufficient. For this reason, ocean literacy is becoming essential for strengthening the connection between science, society, and sustainable ocean governance.

The publication provides global examples and research-based approaches that foster innovation in education, interdisciplinary learning, and active public engagement, with a strong emphasis on experiential learning, inclusiveness, and translating knowledge into action.
