Our scientists participated in the 17th coordination meeting of MEDIAS (MEDiteranean International Acoustic Survey), which took place in Palermo.
At the meeting, the results of the conducted research were presented, including the Croatian MEDIAS, and the protocols of data analysis were compared.
MEDIAS research is in fact carried out according to the same protocol in all European countries of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, as well as in most non-European countries. The main objective is to determine the abundance and spatial distribution of small bluefish (sardines and anchovies) using acoustic methods, independently of fishing activities.
Certain areas must be visited with transects and a sound echo is recorded with an echo sounder of a certain frequency to determine how many small bluefish there are in a certain area. At the same time, samples are taken with a fishing device (trawl) to determine the exact composition of the population that can be seen on the echograms.
