Automated System for Plankton Quantification FlowCam Yokogawa Installed at the Institute

28.05.2025.

In mid-May, a FlowCam 8100 Yokogawa was installed in the Laboratory for Plankton and Shellfish Toxicity at the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries. The device was funded by the Interreg Italy-Croatia ALIENA project. This advanced instrument represents a significant step forward in the automation of plankton community analysis and in monitoring the state of the marine environment.

The FlowCam Yokogawa enables rapid imaging and identification of particles in seawater samples, including phytoplankton, zooplankton, detritus, and other microscopic organisms. With the help of advanced image analysis software, the device automatically classifies organisms based on shape, size, and other morphological characteristics, allowing for the analysis of a large number of samples in a short time.

With the acquisition of the FlowCam device, the Institute further strengthens its capacity for research and monitoring of the Adriatic Sea, in line with the goals of the ALIENA project, which promotes enhanced cross-border cooperation in the field of marine protection.
