Dr Sanda Skejić delivers a lecture at the opening of the exhibition “The Mysterious Life in a Drop of the Sea” in Osijek

25.03.2026.

Following its successful premiere in Split, the exhibition “The Mysterious Life in a Drop of the Sea” has opened in Osijek. The exhibition offers a fascinating insight into the microscopic world of the sea through displays of various phytoplankton species captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Visitors can view the exhibition until April 19 at the Rectorate building.

After the opening, a lecture titled “Visualising the Invisible: Research and Ecological Importance of Phytoplankton” was delivered by Dr Sanda Skejić, a scientist from our Laboratory for Plankton and Shellfish Toxicity. In addition to her significant scientific contribution to the study of this microscopic marine world, she continuously contributes to the popularisation of science by presenting complex processes to a wider audience in a clear and accessible way.

Through her lecture, visitors had the opportunity to learn why these organisms, invisible to the naked eye, are essential for life on Earth, what the main groups of phytoplankton are, and what happens when marine ecosystems are disrupted by human activities and climate change.

The event was organised in collaboration with Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, the University Gallery of the University of Split, and the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split, as part of the “Science Comes To Town” project.
