STRENGTHNENING OF COASTAL WATER MONITORING NETWORK
The Adriatic Sea Monitoring Program, phase II

Location: INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAPY AND FISHERIES (IOF), Split

Monitoring and Observation System for an ongoing assessment of the Adriatic Sea

Tentative program:
The scope of the second workshop of the Adriatic Sea Monitoring Programme – phase II (ASMP) is to demonstrate how to set up an environmental monitoring coastal network for monitoring those parameters relevant for 11 defined MSFD descriptors in the areas with different impacts of human activity on the marine ecosystem. Results outcomes from phase II of JP 12/14 will be presented with special attention to the degree of sensitivity of existing marine ecosystem to human impacts.
During 5 days workshop the participants will be briefly acquaint with different methods used for sampling, collecting and analysing physical, chemical, biological, microbiological, and ecological parameters needful to defined 11 descriptors.
The additional workshop aim is to share knowledge of environmental monitoring of marine ecosystems and benefit of such activities. The Workshop will be organised for the representatives from ministries, governmental agencies, coastal management agencies, universities, private firms, etc.

1st DAY
Registration of the participants in the afternoon. Taking of available workshop materials, brief introduction by the staff.

2nd DAY
Morning sessions: Welcome and Introductions
• Welcome and Introductions by representatives of the Ministry/World Bank
• Presentation of the institutions engaged in the ASMP – phase II
• Brief overview of the ASMP –phase I
• Insights gained from the ASMP – phase II activities

Monitoring activity and network setup /open sea and coastal waters
Measurement parameters in line with 11 descriptors
Area under different pressure impacts
Sensitivity of existing marine ecosystem to human activity
Cumulative impacts of human activity on marine ecosystem

Afternoon sessions: Outcomes from phase II JP 12/14
Descriptor 1: Biological diversity
Descriptor 2: Non-indigenous species
Descriptor 3: Population of commercial fish / shell fish
Descriptor 4: Elements of marine food webs
Descriptor 5: Eutrophication

Descriptor 7: Alteration of hydrographical conditions
Descriptor 8: Contaminants
Descriptor 9: Contaminants in fish and seafood for human consumption
Descriptor 10: Marine litter
Descriptor 11: Introduction of energy, including underwater noise

3rd DAY
Shipboard measuring of parameters relevant for implementation of marine directives (on
RV BIOS2)
(cont. from Workshop#1)
• The aim of this workshop component will be to introduce participants in basic and practical level of knowledge in the acquiring and processing of data, collected during oceanographic cruise, relevant for implementations of marine directive. Onboard equipment will comprise of CTD, XBT, ADCP current meters, weather station, Nansen bottles, drifters. Sampling and measuring and analysis of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, phytoplankton, microzooplankton, heterotrophic bacteria, chlorophyll, standard meteorological parameters and sea currents will be performed in the marine area sensitivity to human activity.

4th DAY
Laboratory exercises
• Laboratory exercises will be performed by Institute staff in order to present different laboratory equipment and methodology needs for analysing data for define environmental status.
Morning sessions:
• Physical lab
• Chemical lab
• Computer centre
Afternoon sessions:
• Biological lab
• Microbiological lab
Social Dinner

5th DAY
Morning sessions:
Data analysing methods in the marine environment
• Preliminary analyses of data obtained: 1) at ship cruises and 2) during the first six months of measurements. Participants will be introduced in practical computer exercises and web data presentation needs in order to share the knowledge of environmental monitoring data and benefit of such activities.

Themes covered:
1. metadata (definition, mandatory and optional parameters)
2. data quality control and accuracy
3. data analysis, plotting and interpretation
4. web applications in data management (case studies)
